A district-level meeting of the District Level Coordinating Committee (DLCC) under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) was held today at the NIC Conference Hall, DC Complex, Kakching. The meeting was chaired by Rohit Anand, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Kakching district and attended by Thokchom Vikramjit Singh, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Kakching and Moirangthem Kapajit Singh, MCS, ADM Kakching district.
Dr. Takhellambam Jullon, District Nodal Officer of NTCP and District Hospital in-charge, highlighted the NTCP’s three-tier structure, comprising the National Tobacco Control Cell (NTCC), State Tobacco Control Cell (STCC), and District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC). He also spoke about the provision for setting up Tobacco Cessation Services at the district level.
Dr. Jullon explained about the effective implementation and monitoring of tobacco control initiatives at district level, by establishing Tobacco Cessation Centres, training programs for key stakeholders such as healthcare and social workers, NGOs, school teachers and enforcement officers, as well as awareness programs in schools. He also stressed the enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
As part of the initiative, an awareness drive on the sale of tobacco products in and around educational institutions and the sale of tobacco to minors will be conducted in Kakching on February 17.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Medical Officer, Zonal Education Officer, District Information Office, Designated Officer (FSA), Senior Executive Officer, Kakching Municipal Council, District Social Welfare Officer and District Programme Manager, Kakching NHM, among others.
On the other hand, the District Administration Kakching in association with the District Social Welfare Office, Kakching continued its ongoing awareness programme on the ill effects of substance abuse as a part of the District Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) Action Plan at Irengband High School and Irengband Upper Primary School, Kakching.
Nutan Nongthombam, Asian Youth Leader Colombo Plan and Ashem Radhyashyam, Chairperson Irengband Gram Panchayat attended the programme as resource persons. L Nimai Singh, Principal, Irengband High School and Roma Devi, Principal, Irengband Upper Primary School led the pledge at their respective schools to make Kakching District drug-free.
