Justice Committee launches awareness programme on 1891 Anglo-Manipur War

The Justice Committee has launched an extensive initiative to document the atrocities suffered by the people of Manipur during and after the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, officials said. As part of the programme, the committee has begun displaying photographs of war martyrs and archival documents at schools, colleges, and other educational centres to raise awareness among students.
According to Justice Committee Chairman Joychandra Konthoujam, the initiative involves collecting photographs, archival materials, and personal testimonies from families of those affected. So far, the committee has compiled 120 documented accounts and recorded stories from 102 families, revealing that nearly 5,000 Manipuri men were executed and around 1,300 were imprisoned or punished following the war.
The committee emphasised that this documentation is critical to recognising the struggles of Manipur’s indigenous communities, who have often been marginalised in national narratives and policy-making. “Preserving this history is essential to ensure justice and awareness for future generations,” Konthoujam said.
Beyond historical documentation, the Justice Committee also raised concerns over the growing drug menace in the state. Officials highlighted that easy access to drugs is affecting children, adults, and families alike, posing a serious threat to Manipur’s social and health fabric.
The committee urged stronger community engagement and stricter measures to curb drug abuse while continuing their work to honour the memory of those who suffered during the Anglo-Manipur War. The initiative reflects the committee’s dual mission of preserving historical justice and addressing contemporary social challenges in Manipur.
