Joint village bodies issue ultimatum over armed presence in Kanglatongbi

The Joint Village Bodies of Kanglatongbi area, comprising the Mantriband Development Committee and Namdilong Village Authority, have issued an ultimatum warning against the movement and presence of armed elements near civilian localities.
In a press statement issued by Chairman of Namdilong Village Authority, Jinwangbou Abonmai, and General Secretary of Mantriband Development Committee, Ng. Jeevan Meitei, the bodies stated that residents of Kanglatongbi have maintained restraint despite repeated tensions, but cautioned that such patience should not be misinterpreted.
The statement alleged that armed Kuki elements have been operating in close proximity to residential areas and declared that any form of armed activity in or around civilian zones would not be tolerated. Referring to a firing incident reported on April 9, 2026 at around 11:30 pm, the joint bodies said the incident created panic among residents, with stray bullets reportedly hitting two houses.
Raising concern over civilian safety, the statement pointed out that an armed camp is located approximately 50 metres from Naga-inhabited households, terming the situation highly risky and unacceptable.
The joint bodies warned that any loss of civilian lives resulting from such incidents would be the responsibility of those ignoring the warning. It maintained that local communities, including Liangmai Naga, the wider Naga population, and Meitei residents, remain committed to peace but cannot accept continued threats to their safety.
The statement also urged the State and Central governments to closely monitor the situation, prevent further escalation, and ensure the protection of civilians. It called for clarity and accountability from authorities to restore normalcy and public confidence in the area.
Citing past incidents, the joint bodies referred to alleged mob violence in May 2023, prolonged gunfire at Kanglatongbi Bazar later that month, a firing incident along Makhan Road in March 2026, and the recent April 9 firing near Mandir Hindi Higher Secondary School targeting security personnel.
Describing the notice as a final warning, the joint bodies appealed for restraint and responsibility from all sides to safeguard peace and civilian lives.
