Imphal, July 6:
With the completion of Dr. L. Deben Singh’s tenure as Director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), the JNIMS Students’ Association has urged the government to appoint a more qualified and efficient director to match the caliber of Dr. Deben Singh.
Addressing media at the Manipur Press Club, Ningthoujam Dinesh, President of the JNIMS Students’ Association, highlighted Dr. Deben’s three-year term, which began on July 7, 2021, and concluded today. He praised Dr. Deben’s significant contributions to the institution and student welfare, extending best wishes for his future endeavors.
The association emphasized the need for a qualified successor, proposing minimum criteria including at least five years as an associate professor and five years as a professor. They also advocated for selecting a director from among JNIMS’ senior doctors. The association cited past issues, such as the 2013 controversy over Director Shyamo’s ineligibility, which prompted an MCI complaint. Additionally, they mentioned the appointment of IAS officer Sureshbabu in 2025, which, despite his lack of teaching experience, led to crises and issues at JNIMS.
The JNIMS Students’ Association appeals for a senior doctor to be appointed as the new director to enhance work culture and student welfare at the institute.
