JAC of Athuan Abonmai ends agitation; decease son appointed as Sub Inspector in Manipur Police Department; Rs 10 lakh compensated

After multiple rounds of talks, the JAC against the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai has ended its agitation after the government of Manipur reached out an agreement today.
The Memorandum of Agreement is signed today between the Government of Manipur and the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai, former President, Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland), in connection with the murder of Athuan Abonmai on September 22 in Tamenglong District.
As per the agreement Rs. 10 lakh will be paid as compensation to the next of kin of late Athuan Abonmai, besides the appointment of his eldest son to the post of Sub Inspector in the Manipur Police Department.
Another point of the agreement is an enquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of late Athuan Abonmai, and to fix responsibility thereof, will be conducted by an officer, not below the rank of an Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Manipur. As far as possible, the enquiry will be completed within 3 months. The enquiry will be independent of the investigation to be conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the findings thereof may be submitted to the NIA.
It was also agreed that a suitable site will be identified by the Deputy Commissioner concerned in consultation with the JAC for establishing the graveyard of late Athuan Abonmai, and where a Memorial could be set up in his memory.
