Since the outbreak of violence in Manipur on May 3, which has claimed the lives of over 142 people, left 17 missing, caused 5,053 incidents of arson, and displaced 54,488 individuals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained notably silent.
The Prime Minister’s silence and perceived incapability to quell the flames engulfing Manipur have drawn widespread criticism from various quarters, cutting across political and communal lines. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also faced criticism for their response to the crisis.
Among those condemning Prime Minister Modi’s silence is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who launched a scathing attack, alleging that Modi’s involvement with the Rafale deal secured him a ticket to the Bastille Day Parade while ignoring the ongoing situation in Manipur.
Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to express his concerns, stating, “Manipur burns. EU Parliament discusses India’s internal matter. PM hasn’t said a word on either! Meanwhile, Rafale gets him a ticket to the Bastille Day Parade.”
Gandhi’s mention of the Rafale deal coincides with the recent announcement by the Defence Ministry regarding its plans to acquire an additional 26 Rafale fighter jets for deployment on its newly built aircraft carrier. The ministry has also expressed its intent to procure three more Scorpene-class submarines, making this deal worth billions of euros.
Earlier on Friday, the Congress party had raised questions about Prime Minister Modi’s continued silence on the situation in Manipur, suggesting that he seemed to have taken a “vow of total silence” regarding the violence in the northeastern state.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh remarked that while it was good to hear the Prime Minister express concern over the flood situation in Delhi, he should also display a similar level of interest in addressing the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which continues to burn.
The Congress party has consistently demanded a response from Prime Minister Modi regarding the situation in Manipur, where ethnic violence has persisted since May 3, resulting in loss of life and property.
As criticism mounts and public frustration grows, the absence of a direct response from Prime Minister Modi raises concerns about his commitment to addressing the violence in Manipur. The people of Manipur, who have endured significant suffering and upheaval, await a strong and decisive response from their leaders to restore peace and stability to their troubled state.
