Court sentence 20 years imprisonment to child rapist, fine Rs. 30,000/; order Rs. 5 Lakh compensation to the victim

Maibam Manojkumar Special Judge POCSO Imphal West today sentence 20 years imprisonment to a child rapist and fined Rs. 30,000/ .

The rapist Sandam Bhogen , aged about 44 , son of of Sandam Bheiga of Sairem Khul, Imphal West had raped a minor girl on December 3, 2013 at Sairem Khul Mayai Leikai.

On August 8, 2017, the rape accused was shot by unidentified persons at around 2 pm at Tera Khamnam Leirak along Sagolband road while he was returning after appearing at POCSO court. However, he survived with critical injury.

The judgment was reserved on 24 September after the accused was found guilty by the Special POCSO court and the sentence was announced today. In its verdict the court ordered 6 month more imprisonment in addition of the 20 years if the fine of Rs. 30, 000/- was not cleared. The session judge also announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the victim girl.

8 witnesses were produced by the alleged accused before the court during the trial as witness in his defense.

Mentioned may be made that on December 3, 2013, the accused raped a minor girl of 3 and half years old at around 5 pm when the victim’s family were out in the paddy fields .

It was alleged that Sandam Bhogen called the victim inside his house and committed the heinous crime which later came to light when the victim narrated the ordeal to her family members.

The accused fled from his residence and surrendered before Lamsang police station on December 6, three days after the incident and was remanded to judicial custody from December 13.

Police started the investigation since December 4 after the family member complaint about the matter.

The accused was released on bail on March 27, 2014 but later detained in judicial custody after he was found guilty
