After remaining non-functional for a long period, the Inter State Bus Terminus at Khuman Lampak has been re-commissioned in Manipur, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s public transport system. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday flagged off buses on 12 routes, signalling the resumption of regular inter-district and intra-state bus services.
The ISBT re-commissioning programme was held at the ISBT Complex, Khuman Lampak. On the occasion, the Governor also virtually inaugurated the District Transport Offices of Jiribam, Noney, Kakching and Pherzawl districts.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said the re-commissioning of the ISBT would ease public transportation and improve connectivity across the state. He stated that the facility would be developed into a world-class transport hub in the future. Recalling its earlier inauguration in 2011, the Governor said the ISBT was envisioned to ensure smooth movement of passengers but could not function as intended for several years due to various constraints, despite being a long-standing demand of both the government and the public.
The Governor said the reopening of the ISBT reflected the government’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure. He added that the revived facility would help streamline traffic movement, reduce congestion in the city and ensure smoother connectivity within districts as well as with neighbouring states. He also urged the concerned departments to take necessary steps to ensure efficient and sustainable operation of the ISBT.
With the re-commissioning, bus services have resumed on routes including Imphal–Noney, Imphal–Tamenglong, Imphal–Ukhrul, Imphal–Kamjong, Imphal–Wabagai, Imphal–Sugnu, Imphal–Yaingangpokpi, Imphal–Chandel, Imphal–Leishangthem, Imphal–Moirang, Imphal–Kakching and Imphal–Yairipok.
The resumption of services is expected to significantly improve connectivity and provide greater convenience to commuters across Manipur.
