Irom Shinghajit, brother of human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila has pressed the United Nations Human Rights Council to take steps to repeal AFSPA.
While addressing the gatherings at the recently concluded 28th UN Human Rights Council, Shinghajit highlighted the human rights situation in the northeast India reeling under the AFSPA for the last 57 years and also to the situation of his sister Irom Sharmila who’s detained and kept in isolation and is being forced fed for the last 15 years for her hunger strike protest against this draconian act.
Two activists namely Shinghajit and Babloo Loitongbam attended the conference held at Geneva’s UN Council Hall from 2-27 March 2015.
Human rights, minorities, racial discriminations, women issues were the main agenda of the conference.
“AFSPA grants the Indian military to operate with impunity in the 7 sister states of Northeast India and in J&K resulting in egregious human rights violations in these areas. It may be noted that working groups of universal periodic review of this council in consonance with the recommendations (not clear) of almost all the major treaty bodies under relevant procedures, as well as the former high commissioner of human rights has persistently recommended to repeal AFSPA, only to be rejected by the Govt. of India. In fact the Government of India has recently rejected the recommendation of its own committee to review the AFSPA set up in 2004,” he said.
“My sister resolves to fight against this draconian law following the massacre of 10 civilians including women and children by the paramilitary personnel in Malom village in Manipur on 02 November 2000. Within few days she has been falsely charged for attempting to commit suicide and is kept under judicial custody. She’s being forced fed by the inserting IVF through her nose,” he added.
Speaking to media persons at HRA’s office, Kwakeithel today, he informed that his written speech has been submitted to the President of the  United Nations Human Rights Council.
