Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Essay Writing Competition

As part of the 68th Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Observation, the Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Essay Writing Competition – 2025 will be held on October 12, 2025, at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur, from 11 am to 2 pm.
The Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust (ICMT) has announced that the topic for this year’s competition will be “Political Status of Manipur, 1947 – 1949.” The competition will be conducted in English, Manipuri, and Manipuri in Roman script, with participants divided into two categories.
For Category A, meant for students of Class 8 to Class 10, essays should be of 1,000 words. Category B will be for students from Class 11 and above, including those who have already passed out from schools, colleges, and universities, provided they register. For this category, the essays must be of not less than 2,000 words. Essays written in Manipuri may be submitted in either Meetei Mayek or Bengali script.
The competition was first organised in 2024 to encourage research and a deeper understanding of Manipur’s history between 1947 and 1949. The Trust stated that this year’s continuation aims to provide a platform for students to critically explore the political developments of that period.
For each category, the first, second, and third prizes will carry cash awards of Rs. 20,000, Rs. 15,000, and Rs. 10,000 respectively. Additionally, seven consolation prizes of Rs. 3,000 each will be awarded in both categories.
Application forms for the competition will be available from August 27, 2025, at the office of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), Kwakeithel Thounajam Leikai. The Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust has appealed to students, organisations, and the public of Manipur to participate widely in the event, which it described as being held under the theme “Understanding Manipur and Contributing to Its Future.”
