MLA L. Susindro today said a statue of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot would be erected along with a Mausoleum Memorial Park at Taungbo-Sedaw in Upper Chindwin District, Sagaing State, in Myanmar, where Irabot breathed his last.
Speaking to reporters at his residence at Khurai Sajor Leikai, Susindro described Irabot as a leader who guided society towards a better path and devoted his life to the welfare of the people.
Susindro said there had been no initiative so far to establish a memorial at the place where Irabot spent his final days. He said the proposed memorial park would not only preserve the memory of Irabot but also help future generations and people across the world understand his contributions and the struggles he undertook.
He said he had participated in a programme held in Guwahati where a statue of Irabot was unveiled. During the programme, he had announced that steps would be taken to establish a memorial at the place where Irabot breathed his last. The proposed Mausoleum Memorial Park at Taungbo-Sedaw is being taken up in accordance with that commitment, he said.
Susindro said Irabot died on September 26, 1951, after spending his final days in Myanmar as he was unable to return to Manipur due to the political circumstances created by the Congress party’s activities. He said medical facilities in Myanmar at the time were also limited.
He added that had Irabot returned to Manipur, he could have lived longer and continued his efforts to strengthen the movement for the welfare and development of the land and its people.
Susindro said the initiative to construct the Irabot Mausoleum Memorial Park was being undertaken to ensure that people remembered that a leader from Manipur had breathed his last on Myanmar soil.
The park, he said, would be constructed with the support of like-minded people and contributions raised for the purpose. A statue of Irabot would also be installed at the memorial site.
