Imphal, July 5:
Irabot Foundation Manipur has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Nongthombam Biren Singh, urging for the implementation of comprehensive river basin planning.
The foundation has highlighted in the memorandum issues such as the conversion of agricultural lands, frequent natural calamities including hailstorms and flash floods, and the degradation of forests, agricultural lands, lakes, and rivers due to global climate change were brought to the forefront.
The memorandum specifically calls for the implementation of comprehensive River Basin Planning Management with community involvement to ensure sustainable development. It also advocates for the inclusion of additional wetlands in Manipur under the Ramsar Convention, aimed at bolstering conservation efforts.
Furthermore, the Foundation urged the initiation of a systematic land use survey and classification to optimize land potential and zoning across the state.
Highlighting the immediate need for action, the memorandum urged the Chief Minister to publish a detailed white paper on flood-related losses and ensure adequate compensation for affected individuals. It also proposed the establishment of a High Power Expert Committee to address the recurring challenges posed by floods and droughts in Manipur.
“We firmly believe that these measures are crucial for the sustainable development of Manipur, safeguarding our natural resources and improving the quality of life for all residents,” stated Gopen Luwang, President of Irabot Foundation Manipur.
