The Indigenous People’s Organisation, Manipur (IPOM) observed National Democracy Day today, commemorating the inaugural session of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly held on October 18, 1948, prior to the state’s merger with the Indian Union. The event, held at the City Convention Centre in Palace Compound, Imphal East, was marked by the theme “For a Common Political Future.”
Prof. Naorem Joykumar Singh (Retd.) attended the observance as Chief Guest, while IPOM President Advocate Y. Devadutta presided over the function. Distinguished guests included Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani, Chairman of Taragi Cheisu, and Dr. Raheijuddin Sheikh (also known as Samu), who were present as guests of honor.
A panel of resource persons contributed to the event, including RK Nimai, Retired IAS; Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan Singh from the Department of Economics, Manipur University; Mutum Churamani, Secretary of Administration, MMTU Manipur; and Dr. Yumnam Premananda, Head of the Department of Law at Manipur University.
The observance of this day highlighted the historic significance of the first sitting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, which took place 76 years ago, before Manipur’s integration into the Indian Union.
