IIIT-Manipur launches AI-powered language translation app ‘Ishaan’

The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur has launched ‘Ishaan’, an AI-powered language translation app capable of translating among several Scheduled Languages and languages of northeastern states.

The app was launched at the IIIT-Manipur auditorium at Mantripukhri under the National Language Translation Mission, BHASHINI, with the aim of expanding access to AI-powered language technology.

Project Principal Investigator Dr Kishorjit Nongmeikapam said the project was developed by IIIT-Manipur in collaboration with IIIT Bombay, IIIT Hyderabad, Gauhati University, NIT Silchar and the University of North Bengal.

The project aims to provide high-quality bidirectional machine translation, including English-Manipuri, Hindi-Manipuri, English-Bodo, English-Nepali and Assamese-Bodo translation.

It incorporates more than 3 lakh sentence pairs and over 60 advanced neural machine translation resources. The app is currently available for Android devices, while development for iOS is underway.
