IDPs stage protest, demand immediate return to their homes

IDPs from relief camps staged protests today at the Western Kangla Gate and under the BT Flyover, demanding that the government allow them to return home instead of continuing their stay in relief camps. The protesters also slammed the government for hosting the Sangai Festival when thousands of people have remained displaced.
IDPs from Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Imphal West and Imphal East districts participated in the protest today, many of whom have been living in relief camps since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The protesters carried placards reading, “Displaced lives matter”, “People boycott Sangai Festival”, “Rights first, tourism later”, and “Ensure our fundamental rights”.
The protesters, who tried to march towards Raj Bhavan, were stopped by security personnel near the Kangla Gate, about 200 meters away from the Governor’s residence. They later moved towards the Uripok area, where the demonstration continued.
Speaking to reporters, Irom Abung Meitei, an IDP from Churachandpur district, said the protest was driven by growing frustration among the displaced families. “The Sangai Festival is being held by claiming normalcy while ignoring the plight of displaced persons.” He said many IDPs have resolved not to return to relief camps unless they are allowed to resettle in their original villages. “We will intensify our protests in the coming days,” he added.
IDPs have clashed with security forces several times since the Sangai Festival started on November 21. Civil society organisations have also contended that if the government feels normalcy has returned, it must prioritise the resettlement of the displaced families.
Over 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kukis since May 2023. Many IDPs say they will continue their agitation until their homes and dignity are restored.
