Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal organized a workshop for exploring genomic resources of the North Eastern Region for the development of bioeconomy from bioresources. During the programme, Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director of IBSD highlighted various initiatives of the institute for the development of bioresources. He mentioned that genome sequencing of bioresources is important for proper authentication and characterization of germplasms. He highlighted that IBSD and NIBMG have joined hands for genome sequencing and exploring genomic resources of the region.
The chief guest of the programme, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University appreciated the initiatives of IBSD for conducting such a workshop at Imphal. He mentioned that economic transformation is only possible through multidisciplinary R&D activities in academics/ research institutes. He highlighted various initiatives of Govt. of India for the implementation of quality research and emphasized collaborative research between IBSD and Manipur University for the promotion of bioresources.
Dr. Sagar Sengupta, Director, NIBMG highlighted various activities of the institute where IBSD can collaborate for the development of genomic resources of this region. He highlighted that IBSD and NIBMG are working in collaboration for the human genome project and INSACOG. Dr. Arindam Maitra, Associate Professor, NIBMG mentioned that genome sequencing of resources of NER is a need of the hour in the era of climate change/ global warming.
During the programme, Dr H. Sunitibala Devi, Scientist, IBSD highlighted various initiatives of IBSD for mass propagation and cultivation of Citrus sp. for promotion of such bioresources in NER. During the event, quality planting materials of Citrus sp. were distributed to farmers and representatives from different relief camps. The programme was attended by scientists/ scholars from IBSD, NIBMG and other institutions.
