Human right organizations demand immediate release of water from Mapithel Dam

Imphal, Sept 26: Housing and Land Right Network (HLRN), Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organization (MDAVO) and the Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRA) today demanded immediate release of water from Mapithel Dam. In a joint press meet held today at Manipur press club Chairman of MDAVO Dominic Kashung welcome the intervention of the PMO office to the state government arrangement for Inauguration of Mapithel Dam on September this month in respond to the memorandum of HLRN submitted to PMO. The Rights organizations present today appealed to the state government to release the impounded water from the Dam Reservoir and to ensure the free flow of Thoubal River. It also urged the government authority to end the submerging of agricultural land, forest and other livelihood sources. The organizations also appealed to institute an impartial inquiry in the corruption and manipulation involved in the rehabilitation and resettlement of the Mapithel affected villagers. Director of HLRN Shivani Choudhury and President of CRAM Sanaton Laishram also attended the press meet.
