Imphal, Feb 25:
Former leader of the rebel group UNLF, RK Meghen, also known as Sanyaima, today urged the people of Manipur to initiate a struggle for unity and harmony by restoring peace and dignity in the region. Speaking at a public gathering, ‘HINGMINNASI,’ held at Takyel Kolom Leikai Community Hall in Imphal West district, RK Sanyaima emphasized the necessity for individuals to transcend political affiliations such as BJP, Congress, MPP, etc., and unite under the common goal of fostering unity – HINGMINNASI.
He stressed that in the pursuit of HINGMINNASI, people must develop a deep understanding and appreciation for their homeland, fostering improved relationships among fellow citizens. “In the current context of Manipur, how do we cultivate the concept of living together?” Sanayaima questioned, asserting that understanding Manipur’s diverse geography is crucial. Manipur comprises both hill and plain regions, including Imphal Valley, Dzuko Valley, Sajik Valley, etc. The amalgamation of these regions forms the essence of Manipur, and fostering unity between hill and plain dwellers should mark the inception of the living together ideology.
Further, the former rebel leader emphasized the importance of identifying the distinct communities inhabiting the hills and plains. He lamented the deterioration of once harmonious relations between hill and plain dwellers, attributing it to political and religious influences. RK Meghen recalled the historical interactions between the Kuki community and the Meitei King, highlighting a shift in dynamics with the influx of Kuki migrants from Myanmar over the past two centuries.
RK Meghen cited a significant increase in village numbers from 1970 to 2022, totalling 1,890 new villages, as indicative of demographic shifts. He appealed to the populace to comprehend the diversity within Manipur and endeavour to revive historical relations for communal harmony.
The HINGMINNASI meet served as a platform to advocate for peace-building efforts and foster a renewed sense of unity among Manipuri communities, aiming to pave the way for a brighter and more cohesive future.
