Imphal, June 9:
Federation of Haomee has raised serious concerns regarding the security arrangements in Jiribam following a deadly attack and subsequent arson. In a press release issued today by Athoi Kamei, General Secretary of the Federation of Haomee, the organization has questioned whether security forces were deliberately removed, allowing for the burning of homes in the area.
The incident occurred after Soibam Sarat, 58, from Jiribam Gularthon, was killed. Following the killing, the District Magistrate imposed a curfew. Despite this measure, armed Kuki assailants attacked the Meitei village with guns at 6 PM and started burning houses the following morning at 7 AM, the statement added.
According to the press release, security personnel evacuated residents from the villages, which then enabled the armed Kuki attackers to set fire to the houses without facing any resistance. The Federation of Haomee criticized the District Magistrate’s curfew as ineffective, stating that it existed only on paper and that security forces failed to perform their duties.
“Despite the curfew, armed Kuki individuals were seen roaming freely with guns, while the local populace was prohibited from gathering or even carrying sticks for self-defense. The Federation of Haomee has called for the Manipur Government to conduct an inquiry into the actions of the District Magistrate and the security personnel involved,” the statement added.
The Federation expressed solidarity with the suffering people of Jiribam, stating that in light of such incidents, discussions of peace are premature and inappropriate.
