Haobam Marak locals block MI road protesting non-repairing of roads

Locals of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai today burn tyres and block Mayai Lambi Road at Haobam Marak area in protest against the failure to repair Haobam Marak Ngangom Leirak road. Traffic along the route was disrupted for sometimes however a team of police which arrived at the site calm down the anger of the protestors and resume the traffic flow at around 3 pm today.
Speaking to media persons a protestors said that around rupees 90 lakhs has been withdrawn by the contractors assigned for construction Inter Village road of Ningom Leirak, Keishamthong Top Leirak, Jailer Leirak, Haobam Marak Ngangom Leirak and Manisana leirak of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency in two phases. He said the first bill amounting rupees 46 lakhs was withdrawn on March 26, 2013 and the second bill amounting around rupees 42 lakhs was withdrawn on March 19, 2014. The bills were withdrawn for construction of the Inter Village road but no works or repairmen was done at Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai area.
General Secretary of Haobam Marak Social Union Club, Suraj said that the locals of the area will intensify the agitation if the government fails to repair the Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai road by end of December this year.
Mentioned may be made that the matter was put up by MLA L Ibomcha of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency during the recently concluded 9th session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly base on the report appeared in a local daily paper. Ibomcha had said that the report for misappropriation of fund for the construction of the said roads was not correct and the construction of the Inter village road under the fund has been diverted for construction of road at somewhere in the Keishamthong Assembly constituency as there was obstruction from taking up the road repairing work at Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai by some individuals.
