Imphal, July 16:
The families of Luwangbi Linthoingambi Hijam (17) and Phijam Hemanjit Singh (17), who have been missing since July 6, 2023, amidst the state’s recent turmoil, have reached out to Anusuiya Uikey, Governor of Manipur, seeking her urgent intervention to uncover the truth behind their disappearance.
In a heartfelt memorandum addressed to the Governor, the parents expressed their anguish over the uncertain fate of their children, allegedly abducted amidst violent clashes earlier this year. They highlighted the distress caused by conflicting reports suggesting the students might have fallen victim to armed Kuki militants.
The plea comes after distressing images, purportedly showing the students alive and later deceased, circulated on social media platforms, triggering widespread demand for justice from civil society groups like the Meira Paibis. The case was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), leading to arrests and the submission of a charge sheet.
Despite these developments, the families lamented the lack of clarity regarding the students’ whereabouts and the absence of closure through the return of their remains for proper funeral rites. They emphasized their inability to bid farewell properly to their loved ones without conclusive answers.
“We urge Her Excellency to ensure transparency and expediency in the investigation,” stated Hijam Kulajit Singh and Phijam Ibungobi Singh, the grief-stricken parents, in their memorandum. They appealed for the Governor’s intervention to facilitate the return of their children’s remains and to uphold justice in the face of adversity.
The parents of two missing students have also formally requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to intervene and clarify their whereabouts. Despite the CBI’s involvement and arrests made in the case, the families have not received concrete information on the fates or the location.
