With an effort to address and find sustainable solutions to the challenges Manipur is facing, a Meitei Unity Summit was convened on November 25 at The Centre for Collaborative Education, Oshawa, Ontario by the Manipuri Association of Canada (MAC) and the Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA).
The summit started with all the attendees pledging their allegiance to the Salai Taret Pheral and homage to the martyred. Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam (Associate Professor, JNU), Banita Devi Naorem, IRS (Commissioner of Income Tax), Anil Haorokcham, Secretary (Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Dr. Rajshree Keisam, among others, were the speakers. The summit marked a momentous occasion uniting the Meitei community worldwide, fostering a spirit of solidarity, preserving Meitei culture and collective growth.
Speakers during the Unity Summit attempt to create a platform for open discussions, exchange of ideas, and the exploration of common ground to promote harmony, and rehabilitation through economic growth and development in the region. The summit addressed the need for socio-economic development, reiterated the Meitei demand for ST status, and implementation of NRC, and emphasizing the role of the Meitei diaspora in mitigating the ongoing internecine conflict.
“The Meitei Unity Summit is a testament to the strength and resilience of our community,” said Yaiphaba Kangjam, the President of the Manipuri Association Canada, he added, “We are proud to have provided a platform that allowed us to celebrate our cultural heritage while addressing key challenges, relief and rebuilding, confidence building, and opportunities that lie ahead for the Meitei diaspora.”
