General Strike paralyses Imphal City

The 24 hour General Strike called by the JCILPS have rendered the normally bustling Imphal area deserted, with volunteers and members taking proactive roles on preventing vehicles from plying on the roads in every locality around Imphal city. Reports of bandh supporters damaging vehicles have been reported, although there have not been any reports of casualties or serious damages. Burning of tyres on the road, piling up of logs, water pipes and boulders along the main roads have hampered the normal activities of the general public.The JCILPS, Manipur, which has been spearheading public movement for the implementation of the inner line permit system in the state in order to monitor the influx population of illegal migrants, has called the general strike demanding stern action against additional SP (traffic) Y Victoria for her alleged high handedness in connection with an assault case and immediate release of their members who were in police custody without any condition.Almost all roads to the State capital have remained deserted since early morning as the inter-district and inter-State transport services came to a standstill. Besides, the Imphal local transport services have remained off the road for the day.Important areas of Imphal namely Singjamei, Kwakeithel, Lamlong, Palace gate, Kongba bazar and Sangakpham bazar etc wore a deserted look till the time of filing the report.
