The wife of former MLA Yamthong Haokip, 59-year-old Charubala Haokip, was killed in a powerful bomb explosion at their residence on August 10, 2024. The explosion occurred around 3:00 PM at the Haokip family home in Ekou Mulam, a Kuki-Zomi-dominated area.
According to police reports, the blast was caused by a locally made improvised explosive device (IED) that had been concealed among waste material at the house. Charubala Haokip was reportedly burning the waste when the IED detonated. She succumbed to her injuries today morning, while Yamthong Haokip and their daughter, who were also present during the incident, escaped unscathed. No other injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Yamthong Haokip, who previously served as the Saikul MLA on Congress tickets in 2012 and 2017 before switching to the BJP ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, has called for an urgent on-site investigation. In a letter to the Officer In-Charge of Saikul Police Station, Haokip expressed his grave concerns over the attack and urged the authorities to conduct a swift and comprehensive investigation. He emphasized the need to identify the perpetrators and understand the motive behind the attack, which he described as a severe threat to his family’s safety.
As of today, no arrests have been made, and the identity and motives of the attackers remain unknown. The Saikul Police Station is leading the investigation into the incident.
