Imphal, Aug 4:
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) in Manipur has raised concerns over the government’s lack of response to the repeated arson attacks on Meetei houses in Jiribam district by Chin-Kuki militants. FOCS claims these incidents continue due to the leniency shown by Assam Rifles towards the militants.
In a recent statement, FOCS criticized the Jiribam district administration’s efforts to secure an agreement with local Hmar and Paite apex bodies. The organization noted that despite this agreement, Chin-Kuki-Zo terrorists have continued to burn Meetei houses. FOCS expressed its disappointment, arguing that the terrorists operate without fear due to the leniency afforded to them by Assam Rifles.
FOCS questioned the Central government’s inaction in the face of these repeated arson attacks and armed conflicts. They emphasized the need for peace negotiations to resolve such conflicts effectively.
The organization also asserted that the Chin-Kuki-Zo community’s actions suggest they are not a peace-loving group, contrasting this with the Meetei community, which has supported peace negotiations initiated by the district administration. FOCS urged the Hmar and Paite communities not to misinterpret the Meetei’s commitment to peace as a sign of weakness.
FOCS assured its support to the district administration in resolving the crisis and restoring peace, stressing that the resettlement of displaced individuals from both sides should be conducted simultaneously.
