Imphal, July 5:
The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) of Manipur has praised Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament (MP) for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, for his commitment in highlighting Manipur’s historical and ongoing struggles as rooted in colonial legacies. His focus on issues from the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods has garnered significant appreciation, according to FOCS
Prof. Akoijam has articulated that Manipur’s current challenges are deeply connected to its historical context. He argues that understanding Manipur’s status within India requires a perspective beyond colonial and post-colonial narratives. His efforts aim to ensure that the experiences and aspirations of the people of Manipur are adequately represented and acknowledged.
He points out that the systemic issues stemming from British colonial rule and subsequent policies from New Delhi continue to impact Manipur adversely.
FOCS highlights the state’s pressing issues, calling for robust intervention. They argue that Manipur’s historical context has led to its current challenges and advocate for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) of 1958. FOCS praises Prof. Akoijam’s commitment to exposing these issues in Parliament, recognizing his efforts as vital for bringing attention to the state’s long-standing struggles.
