Imphal, Feb 7:
The final hearing for the disqualification case of five Janata Dal (United) MLAs was conducted today at the tribunal of the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. The hearing commenced at 11:30 AM and continued for approximately three hours. After hearing arguments from the counsels representing both the petitioners and the respondents, the Speaker reserved the judgment.
The five JDU MLAs under scrutiny in the disqualification case, filed under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, include Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh. Joykishan, Tipaimukh AC MLA Ngursanglur Sanate, Jiribam AC MLA Md. Achab Uddin, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar, and Churachandpur AC MLA L.M. Khaute.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel, M. Bhupenda, argued that the five MLAs had defected from JDU to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and, therefore, should be disqualified. He further urged the Speaker’s tribunal to take appropriate action regarding their disqualification. The disqualification petition, which has been pending since 2022, is expected to be resolved at the Speaker’s discretion in due course.
With the completion of today’s hearing, it has been confirmed that the case has reached its final stage, and the judgment is now awaited.
