Federation of Haomee urges crackdown on unhygienic bakery products

IT News
Imphal, Sept 1:

The Federation of Haomee has raised serious concerns about potential health risks posed by unhygienic and expired bakery products sold by non-Manipuri operators, as highlighted in a press release by Publicity Secretary Huirem Bharat Meetei. The statement called for immediate and stringent measures to ensure the quality and safety of these products, referencing incidents of deliberate malpractice, particularly falsifying expiration dates on food labels.
The press release pointed to an incident on August 12 at Ema Bakery, located at Singjamei Makha Sorokhaibam Leikai and operated by a non-Manipuri Bengali individual found selling expired food items with rewritten expiry dates, a practice that poses significant health risks to consumers. The Federation of Haomee urged the authorities to intensify inspections and enforce stricter regulations to prevent the sale of expired and harmful food products.
The Federation further noted an alarming rise in cases of cancer, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, heart, and lung diseases in Manipur. They called for the Food Testing Department to investigate whether certain food items could be contributing to this increase. Additionally, they appealed to local shop owners to prioritize selling food products manufactured by indigenous people, emphasizing the need to support local producers and safeguard public health.
