Family of Linthoingambi awaits justice; urges to discuss in Assembly

IT News
Imphal, Feb 27:

The family of Linthoingambi, led by her father Hijam Kulajit, expressed deep disappointment with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Government at the Centre and the state for their failure to locate his missing daughter for the past eight months. Speaking at a press conference held at their residence in Tera, Hijam Kulajit emphasized the family’s prolonged wait for closure.
Despite the state government handing over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 23 last year, there has been no significant progress, according to Kulajit. He shared, “I have engaged with CBI officials and other law enforcement agencies involved in investigating my daughter’s case along with her friend Phijam Hemanjit. While four accused have been apprehended and investigations are ongoing, the bodies of the victims remain undiscovered. This entire ordeal appears more like a staged performance to quell public outrage and protests.”
Expressing his disappointment, Kulajit highlighted the lack of support from prominent government leaders, including the Chief Minister, who have not visited or inquired about the case except for Governor Anusuiya Uikey, who visited once and pledged prompt action.
The family further revealed the social ostracism they’ve endured due to the delay in performing the last rites for Linthoingambi. Kulajit demanded the retrieval of his daughter’s body, setting aside the ongoing legal proceedings. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme, asserting its failure in safeguarding girls like Linthoingambi.
Linthoingambi Hijam (18) and Phijam Hemanjit (20) disappeared on July 06 while on their way to tutorials. Surveillance footage later showed them on a motorcycle in the Nambol area of Bishnupur district, before they were allegedly abducted and killed by armed Kukis. Photos of the duo surfaced on social media platforms on September 26 last year.
