In a call to safeguard the environment, Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, who heads the Departments of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Power, Agriculture, and Science & Technology, urged for an end to poppy cultivation starting next year. This was stated by Minister Biswajit during the release of the 2025 Environment Calendar at the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change office, Porompat.
Speaking at the event, Minister Biswajit emphasized the need for collective action to combat global warming and climate change. He highlighted key initiatives, including the appointment of a State Nodal Agency to oversee environmental clearances and the formation of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority. Additional measures include, social Impact Assessments related to land acquisition, establishment of the Manipur State Wetland Authority to protect wetlands, and creation of a River Rejuvenation Committee to address river pollution.
District-level offices and monitoring cells have also been established, while efforts are underway to draft the State Environment Policy (2025–2030) and the State Environment Report for 2025, Biswajit added.
The Minister noted the success of the Nambul River Rejuvenation Project and announced sanctioned funds for the Imphal-Kongba Rejuvenation Project. Plans are also in progress to develop key water bodies, including Yuvraj Palli, Akampat, Takhok, Ushoipokpi, and Ashei Loukhong Matai and other important ponds.
The event was attended by the Director of Environment and Climate Change and other departmental officials.
