Ema Mangol, a prominent leader and lifetime President of the Nupee Khunai Meira Paibi and advisor to Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, has passed away. Her death marks a significant loss to the Meira Paibi movement in Manipur.
Ema Mangol was a key figure in the women’s movement against intoxication and human rights violations since the 1970s. Throughout the 1980s, she was at the forefront of protests and advocacy efforts addressing the challenges faced by Manipur’s society. She played a crucial role in mobilizing women’s organizations against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), particularly highlighting issues of sexual violence used as tactics of terror during that period.
In honor of her contributions, the Nupee Khunai Meira Paibi, along with the Meira Paibee Numit Observation Committee, including Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, AMAWOVA, and MEPWAK, observed a two-minute silence at the Khuyathong office. Convenor S. Memcha praised Mangol’s significant role in advocating for justice and human rights, emphasizing her tireless efforts to address the region’s most pressing issues.
