EECHAL observes 20th Foundation Day with renewed call to preserve indigenous culture

The 20th Foundation Day of Ereipak Enaat Chanura Loinsinlon (EECHAL) was observed today at the Manipur Press Club with a solemn gathering of women leaders and civil society representatives, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to protecting and promoting indigenous traditions and values.
Addressing the occasion, EECHAL President Tongbram Ongbi Ibemcha Leima extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Manipur and recalled the inception of the organisation in 2005 by the late MK Binodini, along with like-minded women at Yaiskul Police Lane. She reflected on EECHAL’s journey over the past two decades and its continued mission to uphold the cultural identity of the state.
Expressing concern over the growing influence of mainland cultural practices, Ibemcha Leima warned that local customs, attire, religion, and the livelihood of traditional weavers are increasingly at risk. She urged collective action to revive and preserve the rich indigenous heritage of Manipur.
The EECHAL president also highlighted the pervasive impact of cultural erosion, stating that rituals from birth to death are now being influenced by external norms. She stressed that the organisation will not remain passive while such traditions are under threat.
Commenting on the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, she lamented the severe toll on women and the state’s economy. “Our traditional culture and religions must be safeguarded,” she asserted.
As part of the celebration, EECHAL honoured past office bearers and leaders of various civil society organisations with gifts in recognition of their contributions.
Presidium members who attended the event included Thokchom Ramini, President of Nupi Samaj; Lourembam Nganbi, President of AMKIL; Yambem Momon, President of Tammi Chingmi; Yumlembam Mema, President of NLANL; Thingbaijam Ibeyaima, President of NIMPAL; Lourembam Pramo, President of ANUL; Sapam Bimola, President of Thoubal Ima; Wangkheimayum Amusana, President of Macha Leima; Lukaram Binakumari, General Secretary of Kha Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup, Moreh; and Angom Nayani Leima, President of Ima Leimaral Apunba Lup, Churachandpur.
