Economic blockade on NH-2 continues despite CM’s appeal

The economic blockade at Namdilong Gate in Kanglatongbi along National Highway-2, under Sekmai Police Station in Imphal West district, continued today despite an appeal by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh urging protesters to withdraw the agitation.

A large number of people, including men and women from both the Meitei and Naga communities, remained stationed along the highway to enforce the blockade. Volunteers were seen carrying out frisking and checking of vehicles transporting essential commodities and other goods travelling between Imphal and Kangpokpi.

The blockade disrupted the movement of goods and vehicles along the strategic highway, one of Manipur’s principal supply routes connecting the Imphal Valley with the hill districts and neighbouring states. However, passenger vehicles and emergency services were being monitored on the ground, and the situation remained under close watch.

Security personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain law and order. As of the filing of this report, no major law and order problem or violent incident had been reported from the blockade site.
