The contention for the top seat at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is heating up with reports of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare having issued an order appointing Dr. Thongam Arunkumar, head of Orthopaedics Department as the new Director of the institute, relieving the previous Director Dr. Sekharjit of his duties. Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Dr. Sekharjit has contended that he does not have any knowledge of the new development, and that it is a formality for the ministry to inform him in advance about such changes. He further insists on confirming the news of the new appointment personally from the officials of the Ministry before making any decision regarding his position as the Director of RIMS. Meanwhile, Dr. Arunkumar, expressing his concerns over the present condition of the institute, decided to follow the directive of the Ministry and have proceeded to take over as the Director, disclosing his intent to spare no efforts to improve the perception of the patients and the public with regard to the attitude and efficacy of the institute. He also mentioned about improving all patient-friendliness aspects of the hospital. It may be mentioned that the premiere medial institute in the North East region of the country has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, including but not limiting to gross negligence, mis-management and insensitivity towards the patients.
