DMCC criticises CM’s Assam campaign

The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) has expressed strong concern over the election campaign activities of Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Assam, alleging that the move could deepen divisions among Manipuri communities.
In a statement, the Committee stated that the Chief Minister, accompanied by several MLAs, undertook a visit to Jiribam on April 4 as part of an election campaign in Assam. It described the development as insensitive, particularly in the context of the continuing challenges arising from the Manipur Violence of May 3, 2023.
The DMCC observed that the prevailing situation in Manipur, including restricted movement between communities and the displacement of people, required urgent attention. It contended that priority should be given to restoring law and order, ensuring free movement, and facilitating the resettlement of internally displaced persons.
The Committee further alleged that the campaign activities risked creating divisions between Manipuri and Manipuri-Assamese communities, as well as within Meetei groups across the Northeast. It expressed concern that such actions could adversely affect the unity and interests of Manipuris residing in Assam.
Highlighting the issue of political underrepresentation, the DMCC noted that Manipuris in Assam had remained marginalised over the decades despite their historical presence in electoral politics. It stated that the upcoming Assam Assembly elections were being viewed as a significant opportunity for the community to secure representation.
In this context, the Committee raised concern over reports of campaigning against a Manipuri-origin candidate, terming it contrary to the broader aspirations of the community. It also referred to a resolution adopted at a Meetei People’s Convention held in Delhi in 2025, which supported the political aspirations of Manipuris in Assam.
The DMCC urged the Chief Minister and MLAs to refrain from opposing any Manipuri candidate in Assam and called for the cancellation of campaign activities perceived to be against the interests of the community.
