Imphal, Sept 30:
The Government of Manipur has extended the “Disturbed Area” status across the state, excluding the jurisdictions of 19 specific police stations, effective October 1, 2024. This decision follows ongoing violent activities by various extremist and insurgent groups, which the Government believes necessitate the use of Armed Forces to assist civil administration.
The police stations exempted from this designation include Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Jiribam, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching, and one additional station.
The state government has determined that a comprehensive assessment of the law and order situation is not feasible at this time, as sister security agencies remain preoccupied with maintaining order. They caution that prematurely concluding on such a sensitive issue without detailed evaluation could lead to public criticism and resistance. Consequently, the government has decided to maintain the current status quo regarding the disturbed area designation for six months, starting from the specified date.
In accordance with the powers granted by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, the Governor’s approval affirms the extended designation of the entire state, except for the designated police station jurisdictions, as a “Disturbed Area.”
