Digital threats amid Manipur crisis: call for responsible online practices

IT News
Imphal, Jan 29:

The Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) has raised concerns over the increasing digital threats that have emerged since the May 3, 2023, crisis in Manipur. The organization highlighted that social media platforms, messaging apps, and online forums have become breeding grounds for misinformation, hate speech, and cyber threats, further deepening the socio-political crisis in the state.
According to MIYC, the internet, once a tool for connection and empowerment, is now being misused to spread false narratives, doctored images, and inflammatory content. It stated that unverified posts have fueled violence, distrust, and division among communities. Additionally, cyberbullying and targeted online harassment have escalated, affecting activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, many of whom have faced death threats, doxxing, and public harassment.
Reports also suggest that digital hostility has translated into real-world violence, leading to riots, property destruction, and even loss of lives. MIYC warned that fake news and manipulated content have worsened tensions and stressed that community efforts are crucial in curbing the spread of misinformation.
The organization urged the public to verify information before sharing, report harmful content on social media platforms, and promote positive messaging to counter hate speech. It also emphasized the importance of digital privacy, advising individuals to avoid sharing sensitive personal data online.
MIYC further called upon community leaders, government authorities, and social media companies to take responsibility in tackling digital threats. It suggested that leaders foster dialogue for reconciliation, the government enforce measures against digital threats while upholding free speech, and tech companies improve mechanisms to curb hate speech and misinformation.
The organization concluded by appealing to all communities to use digital platforms as tools for peace and unity, rather than division. It reiterated that Manipur’s history of resilience and unity should be reflected in the online space, urging people to embrace empathy, understanding, and collaboration for a lasting solution.
