Imphal, Aug 21:
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drawing attention to alleged irregularities at the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal.
In a press release, DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei highlighted critical issues affecting the university’s operations. This memorandum follows a previous submission to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, which reportedly remains unaddressed.
DESAM expressed concerns over undue influence within the university, particularly the re-employment of retired faculty members in violation of existing rules. The memorandum specifically cited the case of Prof. Indira Sarangthem, who was re-employed as a Professor of Soil Science and given additional responsibilities despite reaching the mandatory retirement age.
The press release detailed that Prof. Sarangthem was re-employed as a Professor of Soil Science at the College of Agriculture, CAU, Imphal, effective August 1, 2024, or upon her joining, for an initial period of six months or until further notice. This decision was reportedly based on the recommendation of a selection committee and was approved by the Board of Management during its 60th meeting on July 23, 2024. Moreover, the order assigned Prof. Sarangthem additional roles as Dean In-charge and In-charge, Director of Instruction, CAU, Imphal, until further notice—a decision that DESAM found questionable.
DESAM alleged that such actions not only undermine the university’s reputation but also demoralize its staff and violate institutional regulations. The student body called on the Prime Minister to investigate the matter and take appropriate measures to ensure the university’s integrity and fairness.
