The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day today at the JN Manipur Dance Academy, under the theme “The Impact of Present Crises on Education in Manipur.” The organization, founded on January 3, 2002, marked the occasion emphasizing the challenges faced by the education sector in the state.
The ceremony commenced at 10:30 AM, with Retd. Prof. W. Nabakumar Singh, Department of Anthropology, Manipur University, gracing the event as the Chief Guest. Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei, President of DESAM, presided over the occasion, while P. Nipendro Singh, Principal of Model Higher Secondary School and recipient of the State Award for Teachers 2024, attended as the Guest of Honour.
The program featured speeches, discussions, and cultural performances. Highlights included the launch of the fourth volume of “Lamjing Meira,” a monthly journal of DESAM, and the conferring of the Chi-Ma-Kha Award for academic excellence.
In his address, Prof. Nabakumar Singh highlighted the adverse effects of ongoing crises on Manipur’s educational framework and stressed the need for a collective effort to restore normalcy. DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit emphasized the organization’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of students and ensuring quality education in the state.
