DESAM locks Bir Tikendrajit University over alleged “fraud” LLB examination

The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today locked and shut down Bir Tikendrajit University at Canchipur over allegations of conducting an “illegal and fraudulent” LLB final-year examination without following proper regulations and university procedures.
According to DESAM, the university conducted the examination from May 25 to May 28 despite serious irregularities surrounding the process. The student body alleged that the university authorities themselves admitted that the candidates appearing in the examination were not officially enrolled students of the university.
DESAM claimed that the Chancellor had denied authorising the examination, while Executive Director Birbal reportedly stated that the examinees were not students of the institution and that a private agency had arranged the examination independently using the university premises.
The organisation further alleged that the university authorities failed to produce valid approval documents related to the examination, following which senior officials, including the Chancellor, allegedly left the campus.
Calling the incident a serious case of academic fraud, DESAM demanded cancellation of the university’s registration and strict action against those involved.
The students’ body also accused the university of allowing outsiders with no recognised affiliation to the institution to appear in the LLB final-year examination without the knowledge of competent authorities.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns over the credibility of legal education, with the Supreme Court in recent years warning against the rise of “fraud lawyers” emerging from institutions lacking proper academic standards and regulatory compliance.
