Imphal, Aug 8:
The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has staged a significant protest at the College of Agriculture, Iroisemba, Imphal, demanding the resignation of Dean Professor Indira Sarangthem due to age-related regulations. The protest escalated with DESAM activists locking the Administrative office in response to what they describe as a breach of university regulations.
Speaking to reporters President of DESAM Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei said that Professor Indira Sarangthem, who has been serving as the Dean, received a release order from the Central Agriculture University (CAU) Registrar on July 31, 2024. This decision follows her reaching the mandatory retirement age of sixty-five, as stipulated by the University Act and Statutes. According to Section 4(1) of the Act, a Dean must retire upon reaching sixty-five years, although Sarangthem’s tenure has extended beyond this limit.
DESAM has criticized the university’s failure to adhere strictly to this regulation. In a public statement, the organization emphasized that the continued appointment of Sarangthem contradicts the university’s own rules and undermines its regulatory framework. They argue that the adherence to age-related retirement regulations is essential for maintaining administrative integrity and fairness within the institution.
On August 4, DESAM activists took direct action by closing the gates of the college, halting all operations and drawing attention to their demands. They have called for an immediate review of Sarangthem’s position and urged the university to enforce its rules without delay. The protestors are also pressing for a new appointment to be made in accordance with university regulations.
In response, the University Registrar is expected to issue a new order by August 31, 2024, to officially address the situation. The university faces mounting pressure to ensure compliance with its statutory provisions and to manage the transition smoothly. DESAM’s actions highlight ongoing tensions and the urgent need for adherence to institutional regulations.
