DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit has raised serious concerns over the Manipur government’s partial implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which was adopted nationwide and introduced in the state from the 2022 academic session.
Talking to reporters, Somorjit pointed out that while the previous undergraduate programme spanned three years, the NEP framework extends it to four years. However, students who began their studies under the 2022 session and are currently appearing for their sixth-semester examinations, which started on June 13, face uncertainty due to the absence of syllabi and guidelines for the seventh and eighth semesters.
He also criticized the state’s handling of the Honours with Research programme, describing it as “existing in name only.” Somorjit demanded immediate action from the Department of Higher Education and other relevant authorities to make the programme fully functional, with adequate faculty and academic support.
“The government must act in the larger interest of the students. If authorities fail to provide clarity and necessary arrangements, DESAM will be compelled to launch further protests at any time,” he warned.
The organization reiterated its demand for a clear roadmap and urgent measures to ensure the full rollout of NEP 2020 in Manipur, emphasizing that delays are directly harming students’ academic progression.
