Imphal, Nov 22:

After the 24 hours bandh called demanding a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly on November 20 failed to get support from the people of Manipur particularly from major civil bodies from the Hill district, the All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM), All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Kuki Students’ Organisation-General Headquarters (KSO-GHQ) and federating units of ATSUM had reportedly begun the indefinite blockade along the National High ways connecting Manipur with the rest of the country.
Reports said that many goods ferrying trucks that are supposed to head for Imphal and other districts of Manipur remain stranded due to apprehension of unwanted consequences from bandh supporters and those backing the economic blockade.
The economic blockade is being imposed demanding a special session of the state Assembly to pass the new Autonomous District Council (ADC) Bill, which actually is not under the purview of the Manipur state legislative assembly as it is in Union list.
Meanwhile, various clubs, CSOs, and others called the economic blockade unreasonable even though some support the demand for amendment of the proposed ADC Bill. Reports reaching here said that some organizations have even resolved to attack the residence of some elected representatives which they alleged to have provoked the students’ bodies.
A report that appeared at Cable news service said that members of the Meijrao youth club have even decided to throng at the residence of some Hill Area Committee members as they presume the bandh to have been provoked by them for political gain. As per the report, the club members warned the HAC member Leishyo, TN Haokip, and Alfred Arthur of facing the peoples’ wrath for playing the political games for their self-gain.
