Demand for abrogation of SoO agreement and removal of AR intensifies in Manipur

IT News
Imphal, Feb 28:

People of the state have amplified their calls for the abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between the government and Kuki militants, implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Manipur. The demand was voiced through sit-in protests staged at various locations including Khwairamband Keithel, Lamsang, Wangkhei, Kwakeithel, and Sagolband Salam Leikai.
At Khwairamband Keithel, women’s groups protested demanding the termination of the SoO agreement with Kuki militants and the removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur.
The SoO agreement, initiated by the Government of India in 2005 with the Kuki Militant Group (KNO & KNA), and further solidified in 2008 with a tripartite agreement involving the Government of Manipur, Government of India, and KNO & UPF, has faced mounting criticism. Many argue that the agreement inadvertently strengthens militant outfits, fosters the influx of Kuki migrants, and offers them training in language and combat skills within their camps.
Moreover, concerns have been raised regarding the integration of illegal migrants into militant groups, leading to encroachment on reserved forest lands, wildlife sanctuaries, and other protected sites. This expansion has sparked fears about deforestation and the proliferation of illicit activities such as poppy cultivation, arms trafficking, and drug trade.
The growing discontent among the populace underscores the urgency for governmental action to address these pressing issues and restore stability in Manipur.
