CORCOM extends revolutionary greetings to Manipur on Khongjom Day

IT News,
Imphal, April 22:

Coordination Committee (CORCOM) has extended revolutionary greetings to the people of Manipur on the occasion of Khongjom Day to be celebrated on April 23, 2024. In a statement released ahead of Khongjom Day, CORCOM pays homage to the courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives in defense of Manipur against British colonialism. Additionally, it expresses deep respect for those who have been injured or displaced in their unwavering struggle to preserve the integrity of Manipur.
The historic Battle of Khongjom in 1891 holds immense significance in Manipur’s collective memory. CORCOM’s statement reflects on this pivotal moment, emphasizing that “the battle was fought for the freedom of Manipur specifically, rather than as part of the broader struggle for India’s independence. However, despite the valiant efforts of Manipur’s forefathers, Manipur faced the loss of its sovereignty on April 27, falling under the de facto rule of British officer Maxwell, effectively becoming a British colony.”
“Following the annexation, Manipur witnessed a series of movements against British colonialism, including the 1904 Nupi Lal, Jadonang’s Movement in 1921, and Irabot’s movement starting from 1935, culminating in the Second Nupi Lal in 1939. Despite these endeavors, Manipur remained under British control until its annexation by India. Post-annexation, an armed revolutionary movement spearheaded by Hijam Irabot emerged in 1949, with the revolutionary army steadfastly fighting for Manipur’s freedom ever since, with many sacrificing their lives in the process,” the statement added.
CORCOM’s statement laments the detrimental impact of Manipur’s annexation by India, asserting that it has resulted in “the destruction of the region’s potential. The economy has become entirely dependent, people have been estranged from political processes, and instances of torture and killings have been reported. Moreover, there has been a systematic disregard for the voices of the populace, accompanied by environmental degradation for the sake of development. Additionally, deliberate divisions have been created among communities within the state.”
The statement further reflects on the tragic events of May 3, 2023, which ignited ethnic violence in the state, disrupting the lives of many. It emphasizes the plight of farmers unable to till their land and students deprived of education, resulting in severe setbacks to the economy and the future prospects of Manipur.
CORCOM’s assertion is that “the violence was orchestrated by the Indian state through a strategy of divide and rule, aimed at suppressing the ongoing struggle for the freedom of Manipur. The strategy has been employed to stifle the collective aspiration of Manipur for self-determination and freedom.”
As Manipur commemorates Khongjom Day, the statement is aimed at reminding the people of the sacrifices made by past generations and, as CORCOM puts it “the ongoing struggle for the realization of Manipur’s aspirations.” CORCOM reaffirms its commitment to “the cause of Manipur’s freedom and calls upon the people of Manipur to stand united against oppression and injustice.” It concludes with the message of solidarity and determination, echoing the spirit of resilience that has characterized Manipur’s struggle throughout history.
