CorCom boycotts Republic Day

Imphal, Jan 21:

The Coordination Committee (CorCom) has declared that January 26, observed as Republic Day in India, will be boycotted in Manipur (Kangleipak). The group has labeled the celebration as “Colonialist Replicate Day,” alleging it perpetuates colonial practices inherited from British rule. CorCom asserts that India’s policies in Manipur aim to suppress the people, disregarding their historical and cultural identity.
The statement highlighted issues such as the alleged harassment of opposition leaders, journalists, and activists, criticizing India’s governance for being incapable of ensuring justice. The group referred to India’s democratic system as deteriorating into an autocratic regime according to global democracy-watch organizations. The CorCom also questioned the democratic legitimacy of elections held in this country, quoting Joseph Stalin’s remark, “Those who vote decide nothing, those who count the vote decide everything.”
The statement accused the Indian government of using propaganda to maintain control. Specific mention was made of the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) in Mizoram, which CorCom claimed is used to train forces for suppression tactics. They alleged the training focuses on undermining grassroots movements, breaking the unity of communities, and justifying counter-insurgency policies under the guise of national security. Foremost, they have engineered the issue of Greater Homeland to keep the region in turmoil, according to CorCom.
Furthermore, CorCom criticized India’s internal policies, including what it described as “proxy insurgency” and “false indoctrination,” aimed at creating divisions and suppressing the voices of the people. They also accused paramilitary forces, particularly the Assam Rifles, of employing colonial-era tactics, stating that their operational strategy is rooted in “divide and decimate” approaches to maintain control.
Highlighting the current state of Manipur, the group described it as a “militarized state” and accused the Indian government of using intelligence agencies and security forces to exploit ethnic tensions and suppress legitimate movements. CorCom stated that such tactics aim to weaken people’s resistance and maintain India’s dominance over the region.
As a mark of protest, CorCom has called for a total shutdown on January 26, from 12:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The group has urged the public to refrain from participating in any Republic Day celebrations, stay indoors, and avoid activities that could support the day’s observance. Essential services like medical emergencies have been exempted from the shutdown.
In their statement, CorCom appealed for solidarity among the people of Manipur, urging them to reject the “imposed celebrations” and reflect on the broader implications of India’s policies in the region.
