Convicted Rape and Murder accused awarded death penalty; Court order hang till death

In yet another landmark judgment, Session Judge of Thoubal district court Manipur today awarded death sentence to a convicted accused of committing rape and murder to a 3 months pregnant lady in June 2010.

While announcing the sentence of the convict today, Session Judge A. Noutuneshwari Devi terms the case as the rarest of the rare incident.

“…The convict namely Irom Chaoren Singh is sentenced to death with a fine of Rs. 50,000/- (Rs. Fifty thousand) only and the convict shall be hanged till death.

The judge also orders to give the fine amount to the mother of the victim namely Asheibam Poleshwari Devi. For that, the Court has recommended awarding victim compensation under section 357-A(@) Cr.P.C. as per NALSA’s Compensation Scheme for Women Victim/Survivors of Sexual Assault Crimes- 2018. The court also orders to give a sum of Rs. 10,00,000/- (Rupees Ten Lakhs) only to the victim’s brother namely Asheibam Thambousana Singh by the District Legal Services Authority, Thoubal within a period of 60 days from the date of receipt of the order.

The convict Irom Chaoren (aged about 40 yrs, son of I Biren of Thoubal Leishangthem Khong Manung was arrested in connection with the rape and murder case of 3 months old woman, whose body was found in Imphal River bank near Chongtham Kona Litan Makhong in Imphal East district on 27th June 2010 after she had been reported missing for 10 days.

As per source from an NGO – WAD the total pending cases of Death Women from 2010-November 30th 2020 are:-  Rape and Murder- 32, Murder- 173, Suicide- 150, Suspicious death- 107, Burnt to death-11, Delivery death -30, Death on medical negligence- 8. The Total nos. of pending cases is 511.
