Congress steps up Manipur poll preparations, says BJP must be defeated to restore peace

The Congress on Wednesday said it has intensified preparations for the forthcoming Manipur Assembly elections, with senior party leaders holding a strategy meeting to review the political situation in the state.

In a post on X, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal said he met former Chief Minister and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Okram Ibobi Singh, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh, and AICC Manipur in-charge Saptagiri Ulaka to discuss the party’s election strategy.

Venugopal alleged that Manipur has remained engulfed in violence since 2023 due to what he described as the BJP’s “politics of hatred”. He claimed that lasting peace in the state could only be achieved by defeating the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Venugopal said the people of Manipur had already indicated their political preference by electing Congress candidates from both parliamentary constituencies with decisive margins. He further claimed that the electorate was looking forward to the next Assembly polls to remove the BJP from power and elect a government that would restore peace, address public concerns and promote reconciliation.

The BJP has consistently rejected the Congress’ allegations, maintaining that both the Centre and the state administration have been working to restore normalcy and ensure peace in Manipur following the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.
