Congress criticizes PM Modi for ‘Avoiding’ Manipur

IT News
Imphal, Sept 14:

The Congress on Saturday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for neglecting the ongoing crisis in Manipur while continuing to plan trips across the country and abroad. According to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, the Prime Minister has “studiously avoided” visiting the troubled state, where violence has claimed more than 220 lives since May 2023.
Jairam Ramesh pointed out that while Manipur has been grappling with unrest since May 3, 2023, the Commission of Inquiry set up on June 4, 2023, to investigate the causes of the violence has yet to submit its findings. Initially given six months, the commission has now been granted an extension until November 20, 2024. “The anguish and agony of the people of Manipur continues unabated,” He said, adding that the Prime Minister remains absent from the state.
The inquiry commission, chaired by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. Their mandate is to investigate the causes and spread of the violence between different communities in Manipur.
Jairam Ramesh’s remarks were posted on X (formerly Twitter), as he highlighted the prolonged suffering of the people of Manipur and accused the Prime Minister of indifference.
