Conflict over acquisition of land for Sports University at Yaithibi Khunou settled

Imphal, Oct 2: Land owners of Yaithibi Khunou, who have been opposing acquisition of land for construction of Sports University has finally given up and signed agreement deed with the government of Manipur unloading burden from Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
A reliable source said that Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal District, M Joy Singh had completed signing agreement deeds for purchase of 25.35 acres of land with the land owners on October 1. Conflict area for construction of the Sport University is 32.65 acres, as the owners of this portion of land however, with the signing of the agreement deeds, only 7.3 acres of land is awaiting for settlement. Official source said that owners of this remaining land too have agreed to sign agreement with the government and land owners had given their assent to sign it on October 3.
The source added that the rate for one Sangam (0.62 acres) was negotiated at Rs. 6 lakh.
In November, 2014 state cabinet had approved for acquisition of 442.27 Acres land of 44 Yaithibi Khunou Village, under Thoubal District for establishment of National Sports University. Of this 442.72 Acres, the area of pattaland is 376.2, and land measuring 66.07 acre is Khasland.
Soon after the approval of the state cabinet, land owners of Yaithibi Khunou measuring around 32.65 acres of land strongly objected the government decision to acquire their land. Agitations after agitations were followed and confrontation took place between the land owner and the government machineries over the acquisition of the portion of land which stood in the middle of the propose site for Sport University. The matter was even move to different human Rights bodies accusing government of force eviction.
